Russell “Buster” Attebery, is currently serving his fourth four year term as Chairman of the Karuk Tribe. Chairman Attebery received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Sacramento State University in 1974 and received a Clear Lifetime Teaching Credential From Humboldt State University in 1980. Chairman Attebery is a member of the Professional Baseball Players Association. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1970 and played in the Class A Northwest League for the Seattle Raniers in 1976 and the Portland Mavericks in 1977. Prior to being elected as Karuk Chairman, he was a teacher and coach for both the Redding Ca. School District and Siskiyou County School District.

Chairman Attebery was instrumental working with the NIGA and getting the approval to construct “Rain Rock Casino” in Yreka Ca. The Karuk Tribe is currently putting the final touches on a casino floor expansion, hotel and convention center with plans for a mini-mart, gas station and mini-mall to follow.

Chairman Attebery is the Pacific Region representative for Tribal/Department of Interior Budget Committee (TIBC) and is advocating for equal funding for Tribes to manage their own lands. The Karuk Tribe has written a comprehensive Climate Adaptation Plan, Good Fire Report I and Good Fire Report II and if allowed to apply Tribal Ecological Knowledge to our forest and waterways there is a sustainable economy that will last for generations to come.
